Styling a Hip Hop Period Piece. BTS of Planet Asia’s Music Video “Mystique”

3 Nov

I LOVE period pieces! I also LOVE hip hop! This music video was an awesome collaboration of seemingly different worlds. And yet it all flows very cleanly. I’m very happy to have worked on the wardrobe, and with some awesome people!

When Varras Tower (the director) approached me about this project, he initially asked about making the costumes from scratch. Of course my immediate concern was time and budget. A period piece set in the 1890s requires a lot of attention to detail on the wardrobe. We were faced with the dilemma of having looks that were authentic to the period, but still in budget and fitting to Varras’ vision. We decided on an original Victorian look with a pinch of goth and a dash of steampunk. The game plan being to purchase and rent reproduction costumes, mixed with some vintage items that I had in my collection, and a few of my hand made accessories to complete the looks.

5 Ways to Customize Your Product. Wow Your Clients!

21 Aug

5 ways to customize your product

Presentation means everything, no matter what business you’re in! Below I’ve outlined some of my key ingredients in a successful presentation of a custom gown to a private client.

1. Find out what your customer really wants.

No matter the product, you may run into clients that know (or think they know) exactly what they want. Intentional or otherwise, it may feel like they just want to use your skill, and not your creative expertise. In the end however, you are the one that will be held accountable for how the product turns out. Keeping this in mind, the best way to start is by having a sit down consultation with the client. Have a list of questions ready. Come up with the questions beforehand that hone in on the direction of their vision. Gain insight on how they want to feel about this product and/or how they want it to make them feel. Be honest about what you can and cannot do. Be honest about pricing. If the requests increase, let them know right away the costs that will be incurred.

Having clients that basically give you free reign over a design idea is always a pleasure! Ronisha came to me in need of a reception dress that would flatter her figure, while also showing her sophistication as a newlywed.

2. Give them your input as an expert and come up with a vision that meets the clients requirements and has your personal touch.

I came up with the sketch below. Ivory stretch satin with Swarovski crystals adorning her from the neckline, all the way down the front of the dress in flattering V shapes. The satin hugging her curves, while ivory chiffon peaks out at her shoulders and neckline. Ivory chiffon drapes down the back in a double layer, while a single fan pleated layer subtly shows off her legs in the front.

Lucky for me, Ronisha loved this sketch and gave me the ok to go ahead and get started. Sometimes, it may take some revising, or even coming up with a new concept entirely. Just make sure they are happy before going past this step.

How to Make Distressed Denim Shorts! How to bleach Jeans!

23 Apr

A couple weeks ago, I showed you how to turn your boot leg and wide leg jeans into skinny jeans. I mentioned that its best if the jeans have stretch in them, since that will be most comfortable. Well, Spring is here, so now I’ll show you what to do with the jeans that don’t have stretch in them. And even if they have a little stretch, this will work also.

Denim shorts are a staple for Spring and Summer, why not make yours the way you want AND save some money AND recycle! I’m all about it, plus I have a ton of fun experimenting!

In the last year of college when I was almost done with my master’s degree, I decided I wanted pink/purple hair. So I did it! I felt great! Like the spark of life on the inside was shown on the outside. Being a fashion designer/stylist, crazy cuts and colors are something that I see all the time, even if just within the industry. So I felt like I found something that was sort of a happy medium between the professional world and the creative world. I mean, red is a natural color.. and pink is only a few shades off from that right? Well, apparently not to everyone!

The video is detailing how I got the color, read on for how it changed my life!

How to Watercolor Paint a Fashion Illustration

I’ve heard people say that watercolor is scary. Well, let me tell you- when I first started sketching and painting, I couldn’t even get a stick figure right! Watercolor was my saving grace when I was first learning. It is so easy to manipulate and play with that you can just have fun and get really creative!

I love it so much better than markers because I can get the textures of fabrics to look more accurate. Also because my style is more lightweight than markers allow you to be. Watercolor allows you control over the contrast much more than marker.

Here’s what I used:
